  • Majestically set in the rolling sand-swept landscapes of Wadi Al Abiyad, Dunes by Al Nahda is one of the finest luxury desert resorts in Oman. The Luxury Bulletin heads to the plush retreat for a weekend of relaxation and calm

An enchanting oasis of tranquillity and comfort. That is the best way to describe Dunes by Al Nahda. The luxury desert resort in Oman situated amidst undulating golden dunes is the perfect retreat when you want to get away from the din of daily life and sink into the lap of relaxation and serenity. Located less than an hour away from Muscat in Wadi Al Abiyad, Dunes by Al Nahda is one of the most luxurious desert resorts in the Sultanate.

Overcome with Zoom fatigue and a yearning desire to travel, we decided to head out into the desert for a weekend of peace, relaxation and rejuvenation. The drive from Muscat towards the resort is by itself quite a calming experience once you leave city limits. The busyness of Muscat Express way thins out as you move further away from the city. Post a two-kilometre off-road driving on reaching Wadi Al Abiyad we were at Dunes by Al Nahda, which is a befitting name for the resort that rests prettily on the landscaped dunes.

Spread over 17 acres of land, Dunes by Al Nahda encapsulates the essence of luxury hospitality. The resort includes 50 individual luxury tents, which feature concrete rooms ensconced in canvas. Every tent includes a spacious room and separate bath complete with a sunken bathtub. For families or groups travelling together, the Suite or Royal tent is ideal as this feature two separate bedrooms, separate bathrooms and a shared patio.

Having reached later than we expected, we decided to skip the inviting pool in the resort and decided to relax in our Luxury Tent, as the category of the room we stayed in is referred to. After a few of rounds of UNO, we headed to the restaurant, Fleur. Open on all sides and offering uninterrupted views of the desert and land surrounding the resort, the restaurant is one of the highlights of Dunes by Al Nahda. The design and architecture of the Fleur does not fail to impress but it’s witnessing the transitioning colours of the sky as day progresses to night while having a sundowner or a snack that captivates.

Having stayed in a couple of desert camps and not being entirely impressed with the fare that was served, we were a little apprehensive about what might be our experience at Dunes by Al Nahda. But we needn’t have given it much thought. The food was remarkable, to say the least. Not just at Fleur but even our breakfast next day which we had in one of the private rooms, as it was too warm to sit outside, was exceptional.

The resort usually offers guest the opportunity to head out for a quad-biking adventure but due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in place this is off the menu. The resort has a bunker golf course, if someone fancies a round of the game. Or if you are more like us, then all that you need is the calming stillness of the desert to help shake off the remnants of the daily grind.
