  • To commemorate Omani Women's Day, Mandarin Oriental presented its signature fan design in association with artist Alia Al Farsi

On the special occasion of Omani Women’s Day celebrated on 17 October, Mandarin Oriental, Muscat presented its signature fan in collaboration with Omani artist Alia Al Farsi. The specially commissioned artwork reflects Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s commitment to celebrating local culture and craftsmanship, taking inspiration from the Sultanate’s diverse heritage as well as strong female pioneers.

The hotel’s exclusive fan design portrays a scene of Omani women – each representing the eleven Governorates of Oman, and possessing its distinct traditions, garments, and dialects. As the women appear to walk hand-in-hand, the fan showcases the togetherness ingrained in Omani culture and emphasizes the bond that unites its people and their collective journeys.

The studded golden guard stick is inspired by the mashwak, an intricate jewel motif typically worn on Omani women’s wrists, whilst the circular cut-outs at the centre of the fan allude to the mafraq, which has been worn to decorate their hairlines for centuries. The country’s remarkable beauty is captured even through the use of materials, integrating native Shirish wood.

An Omani national of international acclaim, who was selected as the curator for Oman’s Pavilion at Biennale Arte 2024, Alia Al Farsi was commissioned for the design. Believing that her art is a form of preservation for next generations, she commented: “I was born in Muttrah, and the city has always been my first source of inspiration. It was very important to me that Mandarin Oriental, Muscat’s fan be quintessentially Omani.”

Meanwhile, the hotel’s General Manager, Nicolas Dubort said: “Classically simple, visually elegant and indisputably a part of the Orient, the eleven-bladed fan symbol is what ties every Mandarin Oriental hotel together. With Mandarin Oriental, Muscat’s fan, we wanted to make sure that we captured the subtle nuances in Omani culture – from the northern part of Musandam to the southern Dhofar Governate – whilst showcasing the importance of Omani women in the fabric of society. It’s therefore especially poignant to be unveiling this wonderful artwork today as we celebrate women across the Sultanate.”
